The Hagerty Drivers Foundation hosts its annual “Cars at the Capital” exhibition on Sept. 19 to 24 on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. And displayed in a lit glass enclosure will be the 35th and 36th vehicles to be added to the National Historic Vehicle Register.

The 35th vehicle is the Beatnik Bandit, released in 1961 by Ed “Big Daddy” Roth. Built on an early ‘50s shortened Oldsmobile chassis with a custom one-off body, Roth’s fiberglass bubble top car creation defined the 1960s custom car craze. The Beatnik Bandit is among his most well remembered cars as it became a best-selling model kit for the Revell company, and later a micro-sized Hot Wheels car. The car is now owned by the National Automobile Museum in Reno.

The 36th vehicle is also commemorated by a Hot Wheels toy – the Deora – a Dodge A100 pickup truck heavily customized by Mike and Larry Alexander for the 1967 Detroit Autorama custom car show. In 1964, Harry Bentley Bradley was commissioned to design for the Alexander brothers. AMT did a scale version, then Hot Wheels. It is owned by the Tom Abrams Collection in Detroit.

The vehicles have been added to the National Historic Vehicle Register in recognition of their significance in American automotive history and culture.

Supercar Xperiences – Dec. 13 to 15 – YOUR turn to get behind the wheel of a fleet of exotic cars at The FIRM’s 1.5-mile race track at 7266 Airport Road in Starke . Prices do not include Track Insurance (Starting at $39 per Car) which is required for drivers.
