Andy Leach won the 10th anniversary SEMA Battle of the Builders Presented by Mothers Polish competition with his 1960 Buick Invicta Custom “X-60” at the 2023 SEMA Show. It took Leach nine years to build the Invicta out of his Cal Automotive Creations shop in Bennington, Neb., as he worked to maintain the car’s original intentions, including details originally lost to budget constraints.

“I’m very honored to be the 2023 Battle of the Builders winner. It’s a dream come true; I’ve been chasing this award for nearly a decade,” said Leach. “The Buick was a labor of love, and I’m glad all our hard work and effort has been recognized, especially against all the stiff competition we faced. The Buick Invicta Custom ‘X-60’ embodies every inch of its potential and evokes emotions in the spirit of what this car stood for in 1960.”

Inspired by the Jet Age B-52 (or Boeing B-52 Stratofortress), the X60 Invicta features sleek lines. Wedged sections are present only in the front of the car, its brass trim CAD designed and precision machined, with one-piece, precision-machined rear bumper.

In designing the interior of the car, the goal was to keep the look and feel of the 1960 Buick, while elevating and polishing the visual experience. The interior is built around the iconic Invicta hardback bucket seats and center console, featuring custom logos and pockets. Custom-made pearlized leather and woven aircraft carpeting brings everything together for a seamless and aesthetically appealing ride.

The X60 Invicta is outfitted with the same factory-correct 401 Nailhead engine block featured in the 1960 Buick. Featuring a crank-driven supercharger with custom-made bracketry for the blower, as well as power-steering, A/C and an alternator with a custom-made front drive, it will be featured in the “SEMA: Battle of the Builders” TV special that will air in January on the History Channel. Recent events:

Combined with 8-liter W-16 powerplant with four turbochargers and 1,500 horsepower – it’s a Bugatti Chiron claimed to hit 60 mph in 2.3 seconds, and it was at last Saturday’s Caffeine and Octane:

…plus these:

  • And then there were 150-plus cars at the  Ponte Vedra Auto Show last Sunday on the Nocatee Station Event Field.

The show celebrated 75 years of Porsche – and Best in Show was Henry Wilkinson’s 1958 Speedster

The Brumos Collection was there…

It also brought its ‘Blue Train’ Bentley Speed Six – an exacting replica that’s a tribute to Bentley Chairman Woolf Barnato’s legendary effort to beat “Le Train Blue,” a train that ran from the French Riviera to Calais…and had a built-indrinks cabinet for the sideways rear seat…

Then there was one of seven DeTomaso Guara with a BMW V-8 amidships….

…And here’s just a few of the 150 others on the field…

A Lotus GKN 47D, with a Ford V-8 as it came with…and raced in Canada..all 1,800 pounds of it!

And …

Rolls-Royce presents ‘The Pearl Cullinan’ – a one-of-one Bespoke motor car commissioned by the owner’s family to mark a significant birthday. It is also the first Bespoke project to be revealed by the Private Office Dubai, which works with local dealer partners to bring the authentic Goodwood experience to clients across the Middle East and Africa region.

‘The Pearl Cullinan’ was commissioned in early 2022 by a longstanding Rolls-Royce client, to mark his father’s 90th birthday. The Bespoke Pearl Rose finish is inspired by the color of the owner’s most prized pearl in his extensive, world-class collection and is reserved exclusively for this motor car – it will not be available to any other client in future. Paint specialists at the Home of Rolls-Royce at Goodwood used carefully selected pigments to replicate a delicate hint of pink rarely found in natural pearls. Perfecting the finish required around 30 different iterations, each applied to a full-sized body panel.

The interior of ‘The Pearl Cullinan’ features two different leather colors, with ‘RR’ monograms in Rose Gold thread on the head restraints. Then there’s one of the most extensive uses of mother-of-pearl ever seen in a Rolls-Royce, in the Picnic Tables, fitted to the rear of the front passenger seats.  The upper surface features an intricate, circular pattern inspired by traditional Arabic design that draws the eye inwards to a central point. Each tabletop is then inlaid with 1,351 separate pieces of mother-of-pearl, every one individually selected and placed by hand in the surrounding burr walnut marquetry and sealed with clear lacquer. The natural shade and color differences in both the mother-of-pearl and the wood mean each tabletop is a unique work of art.

The burr walnut fascia incorporates an exquisite mother-of-pearl inlay inspired by traditional Middle Eastern art. Above the occupants, the Bespoke Starlight Headliner shows the sky as it appeared on the night and at the very place the commissioning client’s father was born.

Its large-capacity battery doubles as an energy source, allowing users to power up their gadgets, light up campsites, or even recharge their electric jet skis.

The wheels and front and rear bumpers are outfitted with crampons, or snow traction gears, to allow the car to drive through snowy areas with power and ease.

A racing prototype version of the Aston Martin Valkyrie will take on the challenge for overall victory in 2025’s 24 Hours of Le Mans, with championship-winning endurance racing partner Heart of Racing competing in at least one Valkyrie in the top Hypercar class of each of the FIA World Endurance Championship [WEC] and the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championships [IMSA]. This means that the prototype Valkyrie will participate in sportscar racing’s most prestigious events; Le Mans, and Florida’s Rolex 24 at Daytona and 12 Hours of Sebring.

Lawrence Stroll, Executive Chairman of Aston Martin Lagonda, said: performance is the “lifeblood of everything that we do at Aston Martin, and motorsport is the ultimate expression of this pursuit of excellence.”

“We have been present at Le Mans since the earliest days,” he says. “And through those glorious endeavors, we succeeded in winning Le Mans in 1959 and our class 19 times over the past 95 years. Now we return to the scene of those first triumphs aiming to write new history with a racing prototype inspired by the fastest production car Aston Martin has ever built.”

The brand has clinched no less than 19 class victories at Le Mans, including overall triumph in the 1959 race with the iconic DBR1 driven by Roy Salvadori (GBR) and Carroll Shelby (USA). In total, more than 240 drivers have raced Aston Martins at Le Mans over the past 95 years in 27 different chassis and engine combinations, through virtually every era.

The race-optimized carbon-fiber chassised Valkyrie will use a modified version of the Cosworth-built 6.5-litre naturally aspirated V-12, which in standard form revs to 11,000rpm and develops over 1,000 hp. As with the Valkyrie AMR Pro track-car, the battery-electric hybrid system that features on the road-specification Valkyrie is absent from the race car.

The Amelia concours d’elegance returns for its 29th iteration from Feb. 29 to March 3 of 2024. And the Broad Arrow Amelia Auction will return as the official auction of The Amelia for 2024. The contest displays the creativity of law enforcement, administrative, and fire-rescue agency vehicles and how they represent the community they serve. Partnering with the Florida Association of Counties and the Florida Fire Chiefs’ Association, this contest increases awareness of local agencies.

The 2020 law enforcement contest runs from Oct. 19 to 22. The winner will be recognized at the Executive Leadership Conference and Fleet Exhibition in November. Votes can be cast by the public by clicking on the “Photos” page on the FSA Facebook page, then clicking “Like” for your choice.
