THE AMELIA

The 28th iteration of The Amelia concours d’elegance – the huge display of 260 classics, race cars and specialty interest cars also had honoree – and stock car legend – Jeff Gordon last weekend. Here’s Jeff with some of his most famous cars and concours chairman, McKeel Hagerty:

First up on Saturday, there was Cars & Caffeine at The Amelia:

Then there was RADwood at the Amelia, a celebration of ’80s and ’90s automotive lifestyle:

Finally, The Amelia in its 28th iteration – just a tiny sampling of 260 historically significant vehicles on display:

And drumroll please – 2023’s Best in Show – Concours d’Elegance was (right) a 1935 Avions Voisin Type C25 Aérodyne owned by Merle and Peter Mullin, 1 of only 6 made, only four known to exist.

.

Next to it, Best in Show – Concours de Sport, a 1964 Ferrari 250 LM owned by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum, the last Ferrari to outright win the 1965 25 Hours of Le Mans.

The Pole to Pole expedition team and Nissan unveiled a special version of the new Ariya electric SUV, set to undertake an almost 17,000-mile trip from the magnetic North Pole to the South Pole. Set to kick off this March, the Ariya will tackle ice fields, deep snow, steep mountain climbs and inhospitable desert dunes. Arctic Trucks, specialists in polar expedition vehicles, collaborated with Nissan design and engineering teams to prepare the Ariya for these conditions with intentionally minimal modifications.

There’s no changes to the battery or powertrain, but there are 39-inch tires coupled with e-4ORCE, Nissan’s advanced electric all-wheel-control technology.

“One of the things that underpins all the adventures we do is that we take a standard production EV and aim to make minimal changes to clearly demonstrate its real, everyday capabilities, regardless of where you are driving it,” Pole to Pole EV Expedition Leader Chris Ramsey said. “Our Nissan Ariya is no different as the vehicle’s drivetrain and battery has remained factory standard. … We’ve modified the suspension and widened the wheel arches so we can benefit from the stable platform “

As a self-confessed coffee lover, Ramsey will have a specially integrated espresso machine , and a portable wind turbine and solar panels that will take advantage of high winds and long daylight hours to provide charge for the EV’s battery when him and wife Julie stop.

Hennessey has unveiled a new, lighter-weight, track-focused version of its Venom F5 hypercar, called – the Revolution. And the Texas-based hypercar’s maker calls it “an apex predator on a racing circuit,” and the most powerful and visceral pure-combustion hypercar in the world.

Based on the Hennessey Venom F5 Coupe, it gets comprehensively reworked aerodynamics, suspension, engine cooling and digital telemetry. And a focus on weight reduction means it tips the scales at under 3,000 pounds – the lightest Venom F5 model as honed by Chief Engineer John Heinricy.

“I led engineering on some of the most extreme cars to come out of GM, including the Corvette Z06 and Cadillac CTS-V, but nothing compares to designing, developing, and refining a race car for the road like the Venom F5 Revolution,” he said. “From the outset, we designed the Venom F5 hypercar to be ultra-light and monstrously powerful, with dynamics to match. So, taking these ingredients and adding track-focused aerodynamics, suspension, and gearing, enabled us to create a machine that is the ultimate visceral and emotional driving experience.”

Mid-mounted in the carbon-fiber monocoque chassis is a twin-turbocharged, 6.6-liter ‘Fury’ V-8 rated at 1,817 hp, with an automated single-clutch gearbox calibrated for competitive use.

The new Venom F5 Revolution Coupe makes its global public debut on Jan. 15 at the Miami Motorcar Cavalcade Concours d’Elegance, priced at $2.7 million and limited to just 24 units.

And finally…

He coined the term Hoonigan, and Ken Block showed that skilled attitude whether racing against any and all comers in his wild Hoonicorn Mustang, or hanging the rear wheels of his Ford Focus rally car over the edge of a harbor.

But last weekend, the 55-year-old racer, video blogger and very nice guy died, confirmed on Jan. 2 by Hoonigan’s Instagram:

“With our deepest regrets that we can confirm that Ken Block passed away in a snowmobile accident today. Ken was a visionary, a pioneer and an icon. And most importantly, a father and husband He will be incredibly missed. Please respect the family’s privacy at this time while they grieve.”

Block co-founded DC Shoes, then moved on to race in Rally America starting in the mid-2000’s, steering a Subaru WRX STI. He co-founded Hoonigan Racing with Brian Scotto and continued rallying in the World Rally Championship as well as FIA World Rallycross. And anyone with YouTube saw his many wild-yet-hyper-skilled Gymkhana videos starting in 2008.

Two years later, he partnered with Ford Performance and raced/exhibited his outrageous Mustang, Focus, Fiesta, and F-150 builds. And more recently, he worked with Audi, one of his rides the all-electric “S1 Hoonitron.”

Geoffrey Hacker, head of Undiscovered Classics and Forgotten Fiberglass in Tampa, posts on his Facebook page that there will be 9 American Specials on The Amelia concours d’elegance show field in early March. Here’s another one expected to shine on the show field – the 1955 Bosley GT Mark I.

The Bosley GT Mark I has wowed crowds around the world since it was first introduced via Road & Track magazine to the public in 1955.

Richard Bosley, a horticulturist from Mentor, Ohio had never built a hot rod or car of any sort. In 1952 when he was 21, he decided he wanted to build his dream car that would surpass anything on the market at the time, Hacker said.

Powered by a Chrysler Hemi V-8, the low-slung fiberglass Bosley had an advertised top speed of more than 160 miles per hour.  Intended as a dual-purpose sports and racing car, Road & Track writer Len Frank called the Bosley the most exciting, gorgeously proportioned shape he had ever seen when he wrote about it then. And Strother Macminn, director of the Pasadena Art Center of Design’s Transportation Department, stated that the Bosley changed the thinking of his students at that time.

The Ohio-based creator found it difficult to secure funding to produce his car in quantity, Hacker said. Built at a cost of over $9,000, this prototype remains the only Bosley GT Mark I ever produced.
