And finally…

Last week we had some good news/bad news for MOPAR fans.

First – Dodge is offering a chop-top version of its 2022 and 2023 Challenger, the third-party modifications done by Drop Top Customs via dealerships, as part of the last hurrah for the Dodge Charger and Challenger – as we know them now.

The bad news – the Charger and Challenger as we know them will be gone soon. But Dodge had some electrifying news – pun intended – straight from the mouth of Dodge Brand Head Tim Kuniskis as he introduced the electric Dodge Charger Daytona SRT.

Photos courtesy Dodge

Dodge said it is taking a giant step forward on the performance brand’s road to an electrified future, reimagining what a battery-electric vehicle (BEV) can be. The Dodge Charger Daytona SRT Concept offers a glimpse at the brand’s electric future through a vehicle that drives like a Dodge, looks like a Dodge and sounds like Dodge, it said. The 2-door concept was unveiled at M1 Concourse in Pontiac, Michigan, during the third day of the three-day Dodge Speed Week event series. A new propulsion system drives the Charger Daytona SRT Concept with performance that exceeds the Dodge brand’s famed SRT Hellcat engine, Dodge said, accompanied by an industry-first BEV exhaust sound.

Exterior styling incorporates subtle Dodge heritage cues from the original Charger, with aerodynamics. That includes the R-Wing, a unique aerodynamic pass-through design on the nose. It also a “Fratzonic Chambered Exhaust) An EV exhaust sound that can be revved up to 126 dB, making it as loud as a Hellcat-powered Dodge. It also has “eRupt,” a multi-speed transmission with an electro-mechanical shifting experience “that’s pure Dodge,” the company said.

Oh, and Dodge said that the brand’s first-ever electric car isn’t called the Charger Daytona SRT Concept by coincidence — like the famed Charger Daytona model that was the first vehicle to break 200 mph on a NASCAR track in 1970, the Charger Daytona SRT Concept packs a performance punch. The 800V Banshee propulsion system makes it faster than a Hellcat with standard all-wheel-drive system. The concept also has a PowerShot push-to-pass feature. Activated by the push of a button on the steering wheel, PowerShot delivers an adrenaline jolt of increased horsepower for a quick burst of acceleration. It even has a hatchback.

Lincoln revealed its vision for electric autonomous mobility with the debut of the Model L100 Concept at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, where it was the featured marque as part of the brand’s 100th anniversary.

“Lincoln has been one of the most enduring and stylish automotive brands in the world and in many ways, it is perfectly positioned for a second century defined by great design, zero-emissions and technology-led experiences,” said Bill Ford, executive chair, Ford Motor Company. “Lincoln has always been special to me and my family, especially my father and my grandfather. If there is one secret to Lincoln’s longevity, it is the brand’s ability to balance its core values with a desire to innovate and create the future.”

The Model L100 Concept uses next-generation battery cell and pack technologies, which will deliver game changing energy density and enable efficient, structural integration by treating the entire vehicle as a system, Lincoln said.

The aero-shaped design is low to the ground, with a K-tail execution efficient in guiding the air over the vehicle. The glass roof and reverse-hinged doors lift to give a true sense of welcome, with the signature Lincoln Embrace. Smart wheel covers help to advance the Embrace even further, utilizing lighting and sensors to communicate motion, battery life and human presence.

On the exterior – designers used metallic paint and frosted acrylic in lieu of chrome with a satin digital ceramic tricoat – highlighting a warm, soft white that transitions into cool, open-air blue. And a crystal greyhound hood ornament, originally selected by Edsel Ford in the 1920s, symbolizes grace, elegance and speed and is visible through the transparent hood, capturing depth and illumination.

An interactive, center console chessboard features a jewel-inspired chess piece controller that captures light and depth by redefining the vehicle controls inside the cabin. The controller replaces the traditional steering wheel in this autonomous concept vehicle, making the vehicle experience intuitive and effortless. The front row seats can be flipped forward to create a social setting. And the digital floor, canopy and ambient lighting all harmonize to create a personalized experience that can enhance your mood.

The Model L100 Concept celebrates the brand’s design heritage and harkens back to the 1922 Model L which was built after Ford Motor Company’s purchase of Lincoln. The 1922 Model L was highly regarded for its outstanding engineering, serving as the foundation for the design transformation and the beginning of Lincoln luxury.

The Porsche 911 Sally Special sold at the RM Sotheby’s Monterey Auction on Saturday evening for a record $3.6 million (auction hammer price), the final winning offer coming from a telephone bidder. The price was a record for a new Porsche sold at auction, according to the auction house. The sale reunited members of the original “Cars” film team who created both the car in the Disney/Pixar film and the life-size Sally Carrera, based on a 2002 Porsche 911 Carrera. That team included actress Bonnie Hunt, the voice of Sally Carrera; Jay Ward, Creative Director of Franchise at Pixar Animation Studios; and Bob Pauley, Production Designer for “Cars,” who sketched Sally for the first time 20 years ago. They were joined by Kjell Gruner, President and CEO of Porsche Cars North America and key members of Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur’s Sonderwunsch team including Alexander Fabig and Boris Apenbrink.
The 911 Sally Special was accompanied by a one-of-one Porsche Design custom-built Timepiece, designed specifically to match the unique configuration of this iconic sports car, with Sally Blue Metallic highlights and exclusive details created in collaboration with Pixar.
Proceeds benefited Girls Inc. and USA for UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency.

And finally…

Word is that 2023 is the last hurrah for the Dodge Charger and Challenger – as we know them now.

But MOPAR fans rejoice – Dodge will offer a chop-top version of its 2022 and 2023 Challenger, the third-party modifications done by Drop Top Customs via dealerships.

Dodge says Drop Top Customs is the oldest convertible coachbuilder in the U.S., and its dealers will arrange shipping of customer Challenger orders directly from Brampton Assembly Plant to the company to shorten build-to-delivery time. Orders opened this week at participating Dodge dealerships in the U.S., and the program will also include 2023 Challenger model year R/T, R/T Scat Pack and SRT models.

The price to do a Drop Top Customs third-party convertible option retails at $25,999, on top of the new car’s price.

The new third-party Challenger convertible process was announced at M1 Concourse in Pontiac, Michigan, during the first day of the three-day Dodge Speed Week event series, which featured announcements and reveals of current Dodge muscle products.
“While we hit the throttle toward our new performance path, Dodge is also having fun on this victory lap by celebrating decades of muscle car power,” Dodge brand chief executive officer Tim Kuniskis said. “What better way to commemorate how far we’ve come than to make it easier for Dodge Challenger customers to create a throwback convertible look. We may not upfit them, but those who want a convertible Challenger can get one faster, expedited from the factory to Drop Top Customs. Owners can order third-party modifications through our Dodge dealerships, and then pick up their finished convertible at the dealer once the vehicle is complete.”
For MOPAR buffs, Challenger convertibles were offered as production vehicles for only two model years, 1970 and 1971. Now customers will work closely with Drop Top Customs and their Dodge dealership to order the vehicle. The dealerships will schedule unmodified customer vehicle orders to ship directly from Stellantis’ Brampton (Ontario, Canada) Assembly Plant to Drop Top Customs for third-party modifications, providing a more efficient build time and allowing owners to take the keys after completion. The folks at Fabulous Restorations have recreated Penske Racing’s first race car, the L88 Corvette that scored The Captain’s first win as a team owner in its 1966 Daytona 24 Hour debut. And it is now on display at the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America (MSHFA) in Daytona Beach.

Known as the famous “flashlight” car, it shows what Penske, the 2020 honoree at The Amelia concours d’elegance, could do.

“Although the original chassis exists today, it’s been restored to a later configuration and livery,” MSHFA President George Levy said. “No one has seen this version of this incredibly historic machine, the first Penske Racing car, in over a half-century. Its arrival now is especially fitting in light of Mr. Penske’s announcement that he intends to return to endurance racing in 2023 to seek victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, perhaps the last major prize missing from his blue-chip 60+ year resume.”

Penske had retired from a successful driving career a year earlier, so the Corvette was the racing debut of the Hall of Fame inductee as well as MSHFA Class of 2023 inductee Zora Arkus-Duntov’s new 427 cubic inch L88 Corvette. In fact, Penske’s was the first L88 off the assembly line in St. Louis, with an aluminum-headed 427-cu. in. V-8, plus a factory competition package which included special brakes, suspension and exhaust, an M-22 transmission and a prototype 2:73 Positraction rear axle.

Driver Dick Guldstrand picked up the Rally Red Corvette in St. Louis and drove it, without heater, to the Penske shop in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania for it to be prepared for the race. In addition to special rectangular high-intensity Marchal headlights and a pair of Lucas Flamethrower fog lights, the team installed Corvette Grand Sport-style fender flares to cover the extra-wide racing tires Penske wanted to run.

Once at Daytona, the scrutineers nixed the flares, so the team removed them and riveted small aluminum lips to cover the tops of the tires.

In the race, the front end of the car was shorn off in an accident. One headlight was gone completely, the other knocked out of commission.

Penske told the crew to duct-tape two flashlights to what was left of the front fenders and return to the race. In the end, it finished 12th overall and first in the GT category

The ’66 Daytona Tribute Corvette will stay at the Hall of Fame through the 35th Annual Induction Ceremonies on March 6 – 7, 2023. For more information, visit the MSHFA at mshf.com.

And finally…

The 1960 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider Competition of Jon and Kim Shirley takes in the sights on the SCM 1000. (James Parker image)

The 2022 edition of the SCM 1000 Classic tour saw 48 cars, from a 1925 Amilcar to a 1974 Porsche 911 2.7 Carrera, take a 1,000-mile voyage through scenic roads in the Pacific Northwest. And along with this year’s theme, Cars of Italy, the 4-day event honored Hagerty Grand Marshals Bill and Jane Warner, founders of The Amelia Island concours d’elegance 28 years ago.

To honor the theme, many Enzo-era Ferraris were on the run including three Ferrari 365 GTB/4s, aka Daytonas, joined a 250 GT California Spider, 330 GTS and GT 2+2, 365 GT4 BB and a 400 Superamerica. Other classics included a Lancia Flaminia Zagato, multiple Alfa Romeos, a Lamborghini 400GT and Islero, and several Jaguar E-types, Aston Martins, Porsches and a Shelby Mustang.  Images used here courtesy of James Parker and Bruce Sweetman.

“The SCM 1000 is a celebration of both the magnificence of the geology of the Pacific Northwest as well as a chance to exercise our classic cars on two-lane roads that took us from Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood to the Astoria Column on the Oregon coast,” said Keith Martin, Editor and Publisher of Sports Car Market magazine.

“It was a really fun event,” said Warner, who started the rally in SCM’s 1971 Citroen DS21 Pallas, and ended it in a 1971 Jaguar V12 coupe. “Each evening had a program that was both entertaining and informational. It is really about people who love to drive their cars. The countryside was beautiful as were the various historical stops. All in all, a great event.”

Other special guests included journalist Ken Gross and Jay Ward, Creative Director of Franchise, Pixar Animation Studios.

“The cars were among the best in the world.” Ward said. “The group included all fun, engaged drivers there to have a good time, and the entire event was a balance of driving time with meals and social hours as well. I would do it again in a heartbeat.”

The 2023 SCM 1000 is scheduled for June 11-16 in Spokane, Washington, with German cars as the event’s theme. For more details and to join the mailing list, visit scm1000.com.

Sponsors supporting this event include Hagerty, RM Sotheby’s, WeatherTech, Reliable Carriers, Inc., Putnam Leasing, Rallista and Vintage Underground.

The 40th Hemmings Motor News Great Race presented by Hagerty will launch on June 24, 2023, from historic St. Augustine as it begins its classic rally across the U.S., to finish on July 2 in Colorado Springs.

Organizers announced the annual classic car even this week, which routinely sees more than 120 vehicles no older than model year 1974 compete in a timed, controlled-speed endurance rally. Each vehicle must follow a prescribed common route while attempting to maintain assigned average speeds. For purposes of scoring, the older the vehicle, the better the age factor adjustment the team will receive. Newer vehicles are permitted in Regional Rallies.

The Great Race has visited the Jacksonville area numerous times in recent years, with 122 classics launching in June 2017 from the Historic Springfield Main Street Cruise on a 1,200-miles rally at Hagerty headquarters in Traverse City, Mich. Legendary drag racer “Big Daddy” Don Garlits flagged off the first cars during the event’s fourth Jacksonville visit in 20 years. Ohio.

Automotive lifestyle brand and specialty insurer Hagerty has competed numerous times in a huge 1917 Peerless Speedster nicknamed “The Green Dragon” with a 330 cu.-in. V-8 and three-speed Peerless non-synchromesh manual.

Hundreds went to The Jacksonville Landing when the Great Race ended there in 1997, and large crowds gathered there again when it launched its 2004 cross-country rally. Then in 2014 the Great Race, competitors drove through the Main Street Cruise as thousands lined Main Street en route to the Landing again.

And a reminder, An Evening with Brumos is a social gathering set for 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 5, at The Brumos Collection at 5959 San Pablo Road S. in Jacksonville. And finally…

Aston Martin, England’s 109-year-old creator of some of the world’s most iconic sports cars and grand tourers, including those of Sir James Bond, are making a change to its iconic winged emblem as it takes flight “into an intense new era,” it says.

Along with a new “Intensity. Driven” creative identity and borne on new models such as DBX707, V12 Vantage and the Aston Martin Valkyrie hypercar, the company’s strategic repositioning is the largest investment in Aston Martin’s brand for more than a decade, it said. It also “strengthens its position at the pinnacle of the performance ultra-luxury segment” as it builds on Aston Martin’s growing appeal to a wider, affluent global audience, it said. Hence the subtle change in its winged logo, created in collaboration with British art director and graphic designer Peter Saville.

In physical form, the new wings design is handcrafted by artisans in Birmingham’s jewelry quarter, planted first on Aston Martin’s next generation of sports cars. It is the first major update to the marque since 2003 and only the eighth time in Aston Martin’s history that it has been significantly adjusted. And this weekend, the Aston Martin Aramco Cognizant Formula One team will proudly feature the new wings on its livery for the French Grand Prix.

Celebrating the 100th anniversary of the brand’s first Grand Prix entry, Aston Martin will symbolically race with its original button logo on the nose of its cars, mirroring the marque featured on its first Grand Prix entries in 1922.

But in case you don’t know what the current logo looks like, here it is adorning the steering wheel of the DBX SUV.

Aston Martin also released a short film in association with the logo news, featuring all five of its current high-performance production models.

As for the new wings, Saville said they are “a classic example of the necessary evolution of logotypes of provenance.”

“Subtle but necessary enhancements not only keep forms fresh, but allow for new technologies, situations and applications to be accommodated in the future,” he said. “The process was one of clarifying and emphasizing the key feature of the Aston Martin marque.”

Meanwhile, Hyundai’s high-performance N sub-brand has revealed two new EV sports car concepts, N Vision 74 (left) and RN22e, “rolling lab” concepts as inspirational examples of its electrification vision.

RN22e melds the new IONIQ 6 and company’s Electric-Global Modular Platform (E‑GMP), while N Vision 74 combines EV technology with an advanced hydrogen fuel cell system, making it Hyundai N’s first hydrogen hybrid rolling lab to explore “driving fun” in the electrification era.

“RN22e and N Vision 74 play an important role in the strategic development of our entire product lineup, especially our electrified, high-performance vehicles,” Hyundai executive VP Thomas Schemera said. “Rolling labs represent the continuous development of our most advanced technologies. This unique approach makes us ready for the challenges of the future by empowering us to push ourselves to the limit.”

If N Vision 74 looks vaguely familiar, that is because it pays an homage to the Hyundai Pony Coupe concept from 1974, developed by the legendary car designer Giorgetto Giugiaro. The concept was then built into prototypes for Hyundai’s first production sports car.

Both RN22e and N Vision 74 will continue to be tested and verified by Hyundai’s engineers, so future N road cars can be equipped with their advanced technologies.

Courtesy of Toyota

JDM fans will recognize the name as that of a mostly Japanese market Toyota that’s been around since the mid-1950s, and briefly graced a sleek early 1970’s coupe sold in the U.S. Now Toyota has introduced the latest Crown as a reimagined full-size sedan with vaguely crossover tones.

The new Crown will offer two different hybrid powertrains: Hybrid Max, or the fourth generation Toyota Hybrid System.

Hybrid Max, exclusive to the Platinum grade, is Toyota’s new performance hybrid with an estimated 340 net horsepower. Paired with a 2.4-liter turbocharged engine and a direct shift 6-speed automatic transmission, Hybrid Max produces powerful torque at low rpm, paired with a new high-output bipolar nickel-metal hydride battery for a manufacturer-estimated 38 mpg combined city/highway rating.

The Crown comes on a new chassis, and is almost four inches taller than Camry to offer “increased road visibility, along with easy entry and exit,” Toyota says.

The Toyota Crown should hit U.S. streets later this year.

And a reminder, An Evening with Brumos is a social gathering set for 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 5, at The Brumos Collection at 5959 San Pablo Road S. in Jacksonville:

Jacksonville’s only automobile museum has cars from the Brumos Racing team’s past, plus historic Indy racers and classics in a 35,000-square-foot museum guarded by a big orange Union 76 ball once used by spotters at Daytona International Speedway. The brick building’s design hearkens back to the 1920s Ford Model A plant under the Mathews Bridge.

Tickets are $29.59 each, and include to the collection and a workshop open house with technical staff available for questions, as well as two drink tickets per guest for brews from Intuition Ale Works, wine, soft drinks or water.

The event is for guests 21 and older, IDs needed for alcohol consumption. No drinks are available beyond the two complimentary drinks.

Tickets for the Brumos evening event, as well as the museum itself, can be found here.

N Vision 74 inherited the pure surface, the dynamic proportioned profile and the unique B pillar from the 1974 Pony Coupe concept. Hyundai’s design heritage meets the electrification era with high performance to shape N Vision 74. In addition, Parametric Pixel lighting provides a futuristic flourish.

And finally…

Automotive Hall of Fame inductee, former General Motors Vice President of Global Design and a regular at The Amelia, Ed Welburn, will serve as honoree at the inaugural Detroit Concours d’Elegance on Sept. 16- to 18.

Welburn at The Amelia a few years ago

“When selecting an honoree for the all-new Detroit Concours, there was only one choice, Ed Welburn,” Hagerty CEO McKeel Hagerty said. “Ed’s impact on the automotive industry and his connection to the Detroit Institute of Arts is without equal. I can’t imagine celebrating car culture in the Motor City without honoring him.”

“I’m excited about the Hagerty team’s forward-thinking idea to stage a concours in the cultural center of Detroit, a city with a rich automotive history and the heart of the future of the automobile,” Welburn added.

Welburn started drawing cars at the age of two, and had decided on a career in automotive design by the time he was eight. His mission took on greater meaning when he wrote his first letter to General Motors at the age of 11. The company would write back with next step recommendations. He studied design, sculpture and painting at Howard University’s School of Fine Arts. He continued his communication with General Motors at Howard, which led to an GM Design internship after his junior year in 1971. One year later, Welburn became the first African American hired to design GM vehicles.

Or more specifically. Maverick, aka Tom Cruise, against 13-time Formula 1 race winner David Coulthard, Monaco Grand Prix winner Mark Webber, and journalist Steve Jones in Porsches on the Silverstone Circuit? Well, to quote a certain film, don’t write checks your bodies can’t cash.

This Channel 4 Sport video pits Cruise in a track-bound dogfight against two F1 champions, winner (w/fake machine guns) takes all.

Caffeine and Octane

Toasty is the word for last Saturday’s C&O as hot, sunny skies gave way to clouds, but no rain until its end. So variety was the spice of life at C&O again.

Jeeps were the featured ride at the event, everything from classic World War II units in Army green, to modern rock climbers.

And here’s a sample…just a sample…of some of the rest of the ride.

And then there was this sleek, aerodynamic coupe with its 2-liter Ford EcoTec turbocharged four mounted behind the spare cockpit, clothed in a handmade body with serious ground effects, a soon-to-be ground-hugging splitter, and the name of Alula. Those are handmade curved taillights as well, with a nose-mounted radiator that cools the engine as air rushes up through it and over the body. Can’t wait to see its completion.

The next Caffeine and Octane Jacksonville rumbles into life from 8 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 9, at The Avenues mall’s Southside Boulevard parking lots.

And this time, C&O highlights – convertibles.

An estimated 1,000-plus cars, trucks, motorcycles and more usually come to the all-makes, all-models free show, with all parking spots first come/first serve. And finally…

Those of you who went to the 27th outing of The Amelia concours d’elegance this past March may have spotted the familiar cowboy-hatted figure of Jim Glickenhaus helping his crew dry the morning dew off his 1966 Ferrari P3/4. In previous years, you may have seen some of the New York hypercar maker’s other cars, like his outrageous SCG Boot, a modern high-performance homage to the Steve McQueen Baja Boot, off-road racing truck, which happened told be parked nearby.

But for those who watched any of last weekend’s 90th anniversary 24 Hours of Le Mans, Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus’ SCG 007 Le Mans Hypercar was one of the highlights of a nail-biting endurance race. The team’s cars finished third and fourth, right behind the Toyota hypercars and their repeat win at the 90th running of the race.

One of the two SGC 007’s had to be repaired, falling behind before coming back to finish fourth.

Maybe the winner shows up at the 28th running of The Amelia?
