Caffeine and Octane

The latest one marked the one year anniversary of the renaming of this long-running event as Caffeine and Octane Jacksonville, after it spanned multiple venues including the Town Center and the former Times-Union building.

The July 9th anniversary event featured hundreds of cool cars of all classes from YoungTimers and exotics to classic trucks and the featured class – convertibles.

The next Caffeine and Octane Jacksonville is from 8 to 11 a.m. on Saturday August 13, at The Avenues mall’s Southside Boulevard parking lots.

An estimated 1,000-plus cars, trucks, motorcycles and more come to the all-makes, all-models free show, with all parking spots first come/first serve. Cars should start arriving by 7 a.m. each Saturday to the Southside Boulevard side of the shopping mall, the best way in through Malabar Boulevard. As always, there will be a Porsche section, and an exotics area at the August C&O. And look for literally hundreds of vintage and classic cars, muscle cars and so much more.

Gentle reminder – All vehicles parked in the Central Lot must remain in place until the show concludes at 11 a.m. Please Park in the Exhibit Lot if you need to leave prior to 11 a.m. Those parking in the Exotics Lot and the Porsche Corner are free to arrive and leave at any time!

Benefit motorcycle ride:

A police-escorted Hometown Hero’s Ride will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 23, starting and ending at Adamec Harley-Davidson of St. Augustine at 380 Outlet Mall Blvd. Registration is from 8:30 to 10 a.m., $25 per bike; the first 300 registered bikes include a ride t-shirt.

The ride benefits Builders Care, a faith-based nonprofit of Northeast Florida Builders Association, to fund the construction needs of local first responders and military vets. The ride will honor retired Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Motorman Lonnie Mills, recently paralyzed from the waist down when he was rear-ended in a March 10 accident.

Food trucks, vendors, live music and raffles will also be on-site, but no vehicles like Slingshots or T-REX can ride.

Vet Center Auto Show: 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Jacksonville 1 VA Clinic at 1536 N. Jefferson St. Event includes a health fair.

Summer Showcase 2022 – Saturday and Sunday at the Jacksonville Equestrian Center, 13611 Normandy Blvd. The car show also includes an audio system arena and dB Drag. Admission for those competing in sound system events is $15 now or $30 at the gate. Show cars: pre-reg $20, and $40 at the gate, and $5 per spectator. Tickets can be purchased here.

Nassau Moose Riders Dreams Come True Rocking Car and Bike Show: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 23, at the Nassau Moose Lodge at 850062 U.S. 17 N. in Yulee. Free for spectators and $20 per pre-1989 show vehicle and all years of motorcycles. Proceeds benefit Dreams Come True.

Touch-A-Truck: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 30, at the Clay County Fairgrounds at 2497 Florida 16 in Green Cove Springs. Local and county work vehicles and trucks will be on display. Quiet time is 9 to 11 a.m., then lights and sirens sound off until 2 p.m. Free for spectators.

Exchange Club of Jacksonville’s Family Center Car Show: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 20, at St. John the Divine Greek Orthodox Church at 12760 Beach Blvd. Free for spectators and $25 day of show for display vehicles.

Car Truck and Motorcycle Show: 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1, at American Legion Post 401 at 37405 Henry Smith Road in Hilliard. Free for spectators and $20 registration for show vehicles. Callahan Cruisers proceeds benefit the building find for American Legion Post 401.

38th annual Ancient City Auto Club Show: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, at the Classic Car Museum of St. Augustineat 4730 U.S. 1 S./Dixie Highway South in St Augustine. Free to spectators and $25 day of show for display vehicles.

An Evening With Brumos is a social gathering set for 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 5, at The Brumos Collection at 5959 San Pablo Road S. in

Jacksonville:

Jacksonville’s only automobile museum has cars from the Brumos Racing team’s past, plus historic Indy racers and classics in a 35,000-square-foot museum guarded by a big orange Union 76 ball once used by spotters at Daytona International Speedway. The brick building’s design hearkens back to the 1920s Ford Model A plant under the Mathews Bridge.

Owned by Dan Davis, once majority owner of the Brumos Porsche, Mercedes-Benz and Lexus dealerships before it was sold to Fields Automotive a few years back, the collection was built up by him and the late Bob Snodgrass, president of Brumos Racing and the dealerships.

Tickets are $29.59 each, and include to the collection and a workshop open house with technical staff available for questions, as well as two drink tickets per guest for brews from Intuition Ale Works, wine, soft drinks or water.

The event is for guests 21 and older, IDs needed for alcohol consumption. No drinks are available beyond the two complimentary drinks.

Hot town, summer in the city, so it’s time for your convertible to shine at the next Caffeine and Octane Jacksonville from 8 to 11 a.m. on Saturday at The Avenues mall’s Southside Boulevard parking lots. That’s right – droptops, roadsters, rag tops or just plain convertibles are highlighted this Saturday in a special display within the Central Lot:

Automotive Hall of Fame inductee, former General Motors Vice President of Global Design and a regular at The Amelia, Ed Welburn, will serve as honoree at the inaugural Detroit Concours d’Elegance on Sept. 16- to 18.

“When selecting an honoree for the all-new Detroit Concours, there was only one choice, Ed Welburn,” Hagerty CEO McKeel Hagerty said. “Ed’s impact on the automotive industry and his connection to the Detroit Institute of Arts is without equal. I can’t imagine celebrating car culture in the Motor City without honoring him.”

“I’m excited about the Hagerty team’s forward-thinking idea to stage a concours in the cultural center of Detroit, a city with a rich automotive history and the heart of the future of the automobile,” Welburn added.

Welburn started drawing cars at the age of two, and had decided on a career in automotive design by the time he was eight. His mission took on greater meaning when he wrote his first letter to General Motors at the age of 11. The company would write back with next step recommendations. He studied design, sculpture and painting at Howard University’s School of Fine Arts. He continued his communication with General Motors at Howard, which led to an GM Design internship after his junior year in 1971. One year later, Welburn became the first African American hired to design GM vehicles.

In 2003, Welburn was named GM vice president of design, the sixth person to lead the department in the company’s history, then became the first person to lead GM Design globally a few years later, overseeing more than 1,400 designers working in 11 design centers in seven countries.

In 2017, Welburn was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts by the College for Creative Studies, and inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame. In 2018, he received the Eyes On Design Lifetime Design Achievement award and, in 2021, a Lifetime Achievement award from Robb Report. In 2019, Ed founded Welburn Media Productions, where he serves as CEO and as a producer on a major movie project about the story of African American race car drivers in the 1920s and 1930s.

The return of Brumos Racing, this time at Sunday’s 100th Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, saw Time Attack class winner David Donohue finished third on the overall podium in a 911 Porsche GT2 RS Clubsport.

The Sendy Club’s Wolf set the fastest time with driver Robin Shute, winning overall with a time of 10:09.525.

Happy birthday Alfa:

Alfa Romeo’s 112th birthday was celebrated with a snarl on June 24 in its historic birthplace, as its single-seat Formula 1 racer screamed through  the streets of downtown Milan, starting from Piazza Duomo and passing through Piazza San Babila, Porta Nuova, Central Station, the City Life district and ending at Gattamelata. In 1910, Alfa’s first production site was at the Portello, the brand’s new flagship store.

The company was born A.L.F.A – Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili.

At the wheel, Alfa Romeo F1 Team driver Valtteri Bottas, the Finnish driver is in eighth place in the drivers’ standings.

Caffeine and Octane

Drop your tops and slap on some sunscreen as the next Caffeine and Octane Jacksonville rumbles into life from 8 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 9, at The Avenues mall’s Southside Boulevard parking lots, highlighting – convertibles.

An estimated 1,000-plus cars, trucks, motorcycles and more usually come to the all-makes, all-models free show, with all parking spots first come/first serve. Cars should start arriving by 7 a.m. that June 11 Saturday to the Southside Boulevard side of the shopping mall, the best way in through Malabar Boulevard. As always, there will be a Porsche section, and an exotics area at the July C&O. And look for literally hundreds of vintage and classic cars, muscle cars and so much more.

Father’s Day weekend Car Shows:

CaddyShack Vettes at the Village: The 21st Father’s Day weekend Corvette show saw 176 fab fiberglass fantastics registered for the show last Saturday at World Golf Village at 1 World Golf Place in St. Augustine.

There was a 1955 Corvette with 265-cu.in. V-8, 2-speed Power Glide transmission, signal-seeking AM radio and more – original price – $3,389.

The show was free for spectators and $45 for show cars, every generation of Corvette on display, with proceeds benefitting Wolfson Children’s Hospital.

Summer Volksfest – The sound of air-cooled flat fours and more sounded off last Saturday at the Car Museum of St. Augustine’s annual Volkswagen show.

How about a 1992 Volkswagen Beetle taxicab from Brazil?

Locally-owned, Brazilian-built Volkswagen Beetle-based sports coupe called – the Puma – beautifully restored and pristine.

And this is a 1974 Beetle EV – five Tesla battery modules, a NetGain Hyper9 electric motor, and Prius/WRX electric throttle pedal.

The show was at the museum at 4730 U.S. 1 S./Dixie Highway South in St Augustine.

Toasty is the word for last Saturday’s C&O as hot, sunny skies gave way to clouds, but no rain until its end. So variety was the spice of life at C&O again.

Jeeps were the featured ride at the event, everything from classic World War II units in Army green, to modern rock climbers.

And here’s a sample…just a sample…of some of the rest of the ride.

And then there was this sleek, aerodynamic coupe with its 2-liter Ford EcoTec turbocharged four mounted behind the spare cockpit, clothed in a handmade body with serious ground effects, a soon-to-be ground-hugging splitter, and the name of Alula. Those are handmade curved taillights as well, with a nose-mounted radiator that cools the engine as air rushes up through it and over the body. Can’t wait to see its completion.

And finally…

Those of you who went to the 27th outing of The Amelia concours d’elegance this past March may have spotted the familiar cowboy-hatted figure of Jim Glickenhaus helping his crew dry the morning dew off his 1966 Ferrari P3/4. In previous years, you may have seen some of the New York hypercar maker’s other cars, like his outrageous SCG Boot, a modern high-performance homage to the Steve McQueen Baja Boot, off-road racing truck, which happened told be parked nearby.

But for those who watched any of last weekend’s 90th anniversary 24 Hours of Le Mans, Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus’ SCG 007 Le Mans Hypercar was one of the highlights of a nail-biting endurance race. The team’s cars finished third and fourth, right behind the Toyota hypercars and their repeat win at the 90th running of the race.

One of the two SGC 007’s had to be repaired, falling behind before coming back to finish fourth.

Maybe the winner shows up at the 28th running of The Amelia?

Hot and sunny, last Saturday’s benefit car show at South Point Community Church at 7556 Salisbury Road had everything. There were Porches, Audis and Lamborghinis, plus row after row of tuned and stick Japanese coupes. There was a bright yellow, real Meyers Manx dune buggy:

And a gullwing mid-engine turbocharged Autozam AZ-1 kei car, made by Mazda in the early 1990s.

Here’s what the car looked like when brought to BBI Autosport, which is preparing the car for past Brumos driver David Donohue to wheel up the mountain course.

Now here’s what it’s looking like now in the in the iconic Brumos 59 red, white, and blue livery for what is the first competition for the racing team since 2013. That is when it retired from 50 years of competition.

The Jacksonville-based dealership was sold in 2016, but the iconic race cars that Brumos drivers like Peter Gregg and Hurley Haywood campaigned at Le Mans, Daytona and elsewhere are now on display at the new Brumos Collection, along with some amazing Indy race cars, and some concours-quality classics.

The collection opened in 2020 to the public at 5959 San Pablo Road S. And word is that when the latest No. 59 screams up the peak, it has an honored spot at the 35,000 sq. ft. interactive museum.

Caffeine and Octane

The next Caffeine and Octane Jacksonville rumbles into life from 8 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 11, at The Avenues mall’s Southside Boulevard parking lots.

Meanwhile, the second episode of Caffeine and Octane Jacksonville airs this Saturday at 10:30 a.m. on MotorTrend TV.

It’s got more coverage of past C&O Jacksonvilles in the episode, this teaser showcasing a finned classic local Chrysler.

There is also a segment with local artist KBMER.

An estimated 1,000-plus cars, trucks, motorcycles and more usually come to the all-makes, all-models free show, with all parking spots first come/first serve. Cars should start arriving by 7 a.m. that June 11 Saturday to the Southside Boulevard side of the shopping mall, the best way in through Malabar Boulevard.

As always, there will be a Porsche section, and an exotics area at the June 11 C&O. And look for literally hundreds of vintage and classic cars, muscle cars and so much more.

Callahan Cruisers show

Hot sunny skies and big crowds showcased last Saturday’s third annual Hot Rodz 4 Kids show last Saturday at First United Methodist Church of Callahan.

Organizers say they had 105 cars, trucks and motorcycles on display, raising a total of about $12,000 from the show, held by the Callahan Cruisers, for children’s medical, educational and nutritional needs.

We say Delorean – you say “Marty, let’s go Back to the Future” – like Doc Brown’s epic creation here as shown by the folks at Hagerty at the 2021 The Amelia concours – this is a real movie car:

But late Memorial Day Monday, the Delorean Motor Company came to the present with its new future gullwing-doored Alpha5, an all-electric 4-seater that is estimated to have a 300-mile-plus range and hit 60 mph in under 3 seconds, Delorean said. And if you are traveling through time, it can hit 88 mph in 4.35 seconds, it humorously states.

Only 8,987 of the original Delorean DMC-12s were built between January 1981 and December 1982 at its Irish factory before it all went under when founder John DeLorean was arrested on charges of conspiring to smuggle cocaine into the U.S. – he was acquitted.

But Deloreans – the original 130-hp 2-seat version powered by a 2.8-liter aluminum V-6 supplied by the Peugeot-Renault-Volvo consortium – can still be ordered. Classic DMC has restored and “as-is” models available for sale, plus more than 3.5 million new original stock and reproduction DeLorean parts to fix your own.

As for the new car, Delorean worked with Italdesign, the Volkswagen-owned design firm that helped develop the look of the original Delorean DMC-12. So nostalgic design cues visible on the just-unveiled car include gullwing doors and a louvered rear window.

Not much else is known about the new Alpha5, which could offer limited sales by 2024. But the new car will premiere on Aug. 18 at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance Award ramp, and Aug. 21 on its Concept Lawn.

Local car collectors Mark and Hilary Becker took their stunning 1942 Chrysler Royal to last weekend’s AACA Grand National Meet in Virginia Beach, and came home with a Grand National Award. Becker, also Director of Entrants and Judges at The Amelia concours d’elegance, took the coupe to the Antique Automobile Club of America event, which was hosted by the Tidewater Region AACA at The Founders Inn in Virginia Beach. Only vehicles with AACA Senior Awards are eligible to participate.

So you may remember seeing the 2023 Nissan Z at the last Caffeine and Octane at The Avenues.

Well, the folks at Hagerty Media and Jason wondered – How fast is the new Nissan Z compared to a Toyota GR Supra 3.0 and Ford Mustang Mach 1? The 2023 Nissan Z had a 9-speed automatic transmission, vs. the 10-speed Mach 1 and 8-speed Supra. I won’t spoil it for you – here’s the Hagerty Media story and video report.

It has graced The Amelia concours d’elegance, and was the prime transportation in its day of famed Mercedes-Benz driving engineer Rudi Uhlenhaut, aka the father of 300 SL.

Now one of only two Mercedes 300 SLR “Uhlenhaut coupés” created in 1955 has been sold at a private May 5 RM Sotheby’s auction for a stunning $142 million to a private collector, the auction house to donate the proceeds to establish a worldwide “Mercedes-Benz Fund” for long-term educational and research scholarships in the areas of environmental science for young people.

That makes it the world’s most expensive care. Our friends at Hagerty broke the news; now they have posted another piece about driving it. Actually, Andrew Frankel did, earplugs and all – here’s his detailed piece.

And here’s something you need to fire up the speakers for – The Brumos Collection got some hydrocarbons fired up with a recent run of its 1968 Porsche 908, which is normally exhibited at the museum at 5959 San Pablo Road S. The museum likes to exercise their cars, this time the 908 being warmed up and flown low in advance of the Highlands Motoring Festival, Thursday thru Sunday, June 9 to 12, in Highlands, NC

This particular 908, with drivers Jo Siffert and Vic Elford at the helm, won the Nürburgring 1000km in 1968.

Caffeine and Octane

The name is Z – just Z: The gang at HSR – Historic Sportscar Racing – brought the new 2023 Nissan Z to last Saturday’s Caffeine and Octane.

The 2023 Z’s 3-liter V-6 twin turbo engine has 400 hp at 6,400 rpm, and 350 lb-ft of torque from 1,600 to 5,200 rpm. That’s 68 more horsepower than the 370Z, with a 30 percent increase in torque and an estimated 15 percent improvement in 0 to 60 mph acceleration. This one had the 9-speed automatic transmission with standard launch control system.

Inside, a12.3-inch TFT meter display is all-new with three display modes to suit driver preference – “Normal,” “Enhanced” with tachometer and speedometer on the edges of the display, and “Sport” with the tachometer in the center with shift-up light, plus boost gauge or G meter display.

The new Z’s center stack put three analog pod gauges on the instrument panel (boost, turbo speed, volt) within the driver’s eyesight. Both the manual and automatic shift levers are new, Nissan says.

Nissan says the Z Coupe Sport 6MT or 9AT starts at $39,990, while the top-level Z Coupe Proto Spec starts at $52,990.

There’s another Porsche readying to tackle Pikes Peak, and it’s a Hoonigan from Ken Block.

Built by BBi Autosport in conjunction with Hoonigan and Hoonigan Racing Division, it’s got 1,400 hp with all-wheel-drive, specially designed for the 2022 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. And its all-new livery was created by artist Trouble Andrew, a.k.a. Guccighost, paying homage to the famous 1971 Porsche 917/20 “Pink Pig” race car.

The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is an invitation-only automobile hill climb to the summit of Pikes Peak in Colorado on Sunday, June 26. It’s the 100th running on a 12.42-mile course with 156 turns to finish line at 14,115 feet above sea level. It’s not Block’s first pass up Pikes Peak, racing in 2005 in a lower-class Group N rally car. Block also piloted his 1,400hp, twin-turbo, methanol-fueled 1965 Ford Mustang Hoonicorn RTR V2 in 2017 in the “Climbkhana: Pikes Peak” film.

Hoonipigasus was specifically built to suit Block’s driving style and features a transmission tunnel, known as the “Chorizo Tunnel,” that goes from shoulder height down to the front axle, resulting in a lower center of gravity. Weighing just 1,000 kg, the machine features GPS Height-adjusted suspension based on previous year’s telemetry. This year, the car will be competing in the PPO (Pikes Peak Open) class with hopes of adding an overall victory to BBi’s 8 podiums with 5 class wins at the PPIHC.

“The Pikes Peak Hill Climb is one of the big reasons as to why I’m a rally driver,” said Block, co-founder of Hoonigan. “The list of drivers who have raced and won this hill climb includes many of my heroes: Walter Rohrl, Ari Vatanen, Michelle Mouton, Sebastien Loeb and Rod Millen to name a few. I’ve always wanted the chance to race Pikes Peak at the top level and compete for an overall win – and with our team and BBi Autosport creating this amazing Porsche, we’ve got a good shot!”

In case you forgot, Brumos Racing of Jacksonville hits Pikes Peak in June as well with driver David Donohue at the wheel of a Porsche GT2 RS Clubsport prepared in the iconic Brumos red, white, and blue livery. And now, The Brumos Collection has a t-shirt to go with the car.

This event is the first competition for Brumos since 2013, when it retired from 50 years of competing in a variety of series and classes.

The PPIHC is Donohue’s 120th race driving for Brumos. Of note, he was part of the team that brought Brumos its fourth overall win at the 24 hours of Daytona in 2009, more than 30 years after three Brumos victories in 1973, 1975 and 1978.

The Brumos Collection, opened in 2020, is a 35,000 sq. ft. interactive museum at 5959 San Pablo Road S. Ultimately, the new Brumos GT2 RS Clubsport will join the many cars at the Brumos Collection in Jacksonville.

Caffeine and Octane

It’s going to be Toyota Supras and Chevrolet SS as the special display vehicles from 8 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 14, at The Avenues mall’s south side at 10300 Southside Blvd.

An estimated 1,000-plus cars, trucks and more usually come to Caffeine and Octane Jacksonville, an all makes, all models free show, with all parking spots first come/first serve. Cars should start arriving by 7 a.m. to the Southside Boulevard side of the shopping mall, the best way in through Malabar Boulevard.
As always, there is a Porsche section, and an exotics area.

And look for literally hundreds of vintage and classic cars, muscle cars and so much more.

Rumble at the Ranch – Hot Rod vs Rat Rod: Friday and Saturday at WW Motocross Park, 1439 Otis Road in Jacksonville. The event features burnout contests with a $1,500 purse, car show and other events.

Cars for a Cause: 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday at the Winston Family YMCA at 221 Riverside Ave. Free for spectators and minimum $25 donation for show vehicles, proceeds to help the Winston Family YMCA.

St. Augustine Cruiser’s Car Show: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Classic Car Museum of St. Augustine, at 4730 U.S. 1 S./Dixie Highway South in St Augustine.

Ninth annual Boots on the Ground Poker Run and Concert: 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the Flamingo Lake RV Resort, 3640 Newcomb Road.  The American Legion Riders Chapter 9, Flamingo Lake RV Resort and Dick’s Wings, host the event to benefit the K9s For Warriors Foundation, K9 Line, Inc, The Veterans Village of NE Florida, Mission 22, Project Vet Relief, The Florida Fallen Heroes Memorial Fund, and Wreaths Across America.

Auto designer Henrik Fisker, who designed the Fisker Ocean EV SUV, has revealed a tease of his new Project Ronin electric sports car.

“The aim is to achieve the world’s longest range for a production EV, combined with extremely high levels of performance,” Fisker said in a news release. “Project Ronin will be a showcase for our internal engineering, powertrain, and software capabilities.”

The code name was inspired by the film of the same title, development of the Ronin beginning last year. The goal, he said – create a “futuristic Grand Touring sports car suitable for long road trips while carrying four adults and their luggage.”

Not many details have arisen yet, other than unique doors for better ingress and egress and what Fisker called “a luxurious, sustainable vegan interior.” Look for more info in August 2023, with production starting in the second half of 2024.

Well, vlogger Bill Bortzfield learned this EV Mustang Mach-E GT-Performance can do a 3.5 second 0-60 mph run while still getting the equivalent of 82 miles per gallon.
