Jacksonville Car Culture events calendar

The next Caffeine & Octane Jacksonville is set for Saturday, Aug. 12, at The Avenues mall at 10300 Southside Blvd.

Cars should start arriving by 7 a.m. for the second Saturday C&O from the Southside Boulevard side of the shopping mall, the best way in through Malabar Boulevard. As always, there will be a Porsche Jacksonville corner, an MBCA Southern Stars section, exotics area, Classics Rows and more at each C&O. Ol’ Parnelli Jones would be proud to see what Hennessey Performance has done with its latest mod of a modern Ford Mustang.

Looking as evil as Jones’s 1969 Bud Moore Boss 302 Ford Mustang, Hennessey announces high-performance supercharged upgrades for the seventh-generation 2024 Ford S650 Mustang Dark Horse. Fitted with Ford’s naturally aspirated Gen-4 Coyote 5-liter V-8, Hennessey upgrades the Dark Horse with GT500 connecting rods and a dual throttle body to earn a factory rating of 500 hp. The 2024 Dark Horse may be ordered with either a Tremec 6-speed manual (3.73 gears) or with Ford’s 10-speed automatic (3.55 gearing).

Regardless of transmission choice, the track-focused Mustang features upgraded multi-piston Brembo performance brakes on both axles.

A high-performance supercharger and a high-flow air induction system, upgraded fuel injectors, and a new fuel pump gives the ‘H850’ Dark Horse 850 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque – a 70 percent increase in power!

To complement its potent powerplant, the Hennessey ‘H850’ Ford Mustang Dark Horse is visually enhanced with a carbon-fiber front splitter, carbon-fiber side skirts, and a carbon-fiber rear spoiler.

Production will begin later this year.

The Triumph Motor Company showcases a new electric TR25 concept car, created by design house Makkina.

Unveiled in London, the TR25 pays particular homage to the record-breaking ‘Jabbeke’ Triumph TR2, which broke the land speed record for production cars under two liters in May 1953.

The ‘Jabbeke’ TR2 was a pre-production prototype featuring streamlined parts including an under-shield, rear-wing spats, and a metal cockpit cover.

Makkina’s EV sports car retains the TR’s distinctive headlights with an aerodynamically-optimized exterior, the single-seat configuration with optional flip-out jump seat for the passenger. Using an all-electric BMW i3S as a platform, Makkina has been able to give the TR25 a near 50-50 weight distribution. With a minimalistic interior, the TR25’s cockpit aims to place the driver with minimal instruments and controls. A self-centering dial in the steering wheel displays all vital information while a central binnacle will show road speed, charge levels, and battery range.

The Amelia Concours d’Elegance returns for its 29th iteration from Feb. 29 to March 3 of 2024. And the Broad Arrow Amelia Auction will return as the official auction of The Amelia for 2024. The Amelia Auction will be extended to two days for 2024 (February 29 – March 1) following a successful inaugural event that saw $31 million in total sales and 81 percent of all lots sold. Hemmings Great Race presented by Coker Tire: A 40-year tradition, cars built pre-1970’s launch on a time-speed-distance rally across America. Fan can see the cars over three days – Thursday is Tech Inspection Day at World Golf Village. Then on Friday from noon to 3 p.m., a practice rally followed by lunch at the Classic Car Museum of St. Augustine. Then from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, the 100-plus classics will begin parking ahead of the rally, one by one, at Francis Field in St. Augustine. They head out one by one starting at 11 a.m., ending eight days later – July 2 – in Pueblo, Colo., with Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, Missouri and Kansas in between.

Second annual Riding for a Cause car/bike show and parade: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Charles Boobie Clark Park, 8793 Sibbald Road.

Freedom Fest Car Show: 3 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 1, at Orange Park Mall at 1910 Wells Road. The 101st running of the famed Race to the Clouds, an invitational automobile hill climb to the summit of Pikes Peak, is set for Sunday.

And David Donohue, driving the Brumos Racing Porsche GT2 RS ClubSport, clocked a new TA1 qualifying record earlier this week, breaking his own record from last year. There are 66 drivers entered for this year’s race.

And legendary Brumos Racing driver Hurley Haywood will be Pikes Peak Hill Climb grand marshal this year.

If that Brumos news isn’t cool enough, how about a Ford van?

But not just any van – how about an electric Ford SuperVan 4.2 with motorsports legend Romain Dumas at the wheel in his eighth appearance at the event. Specifically designed to conquer America’s mountain and showcase the extreme limits of electric power, Ford said the van underwent a complete aerodynamic redesign – over 4,400 pounds of downforce at 150 mph.

There’s three STARD UHP 6-phase motors and STARD’s Ultra High Performance Li-Polymer NMC pouch cells, one motor powering the front and two in the rear for more than 1,050 kW (1,400 hp).  There’s a revised regenerative braking system with carbon ceramic brake discs, magnesium forged wheels wrapped in Pirelli P Zero race tires and a minimalist race interior.

On what would have been Carroll Shelby’s 100th birthday, Goodwood will celebrate the legendary American driver, car manufacturer and entrepreneur at this year’s Goodwood Revival from Sept. 8 to 10. That will include one of Goodwood’s signature tributes, comprising cars that were not only raced, but also designed and developed by the 1959 Le Mans winner. Look for the MG-TC in which Shelby competed for the very first time, in 1952; and an assortment of Cobras set to take to the track in the all-star Royal Automobile Club TT Celebration. Meanwhile, the Whitsun Trophy will host a number of examples of the Ford GT40, whose design Shelby played such an integral part in refining.

Goodwood also celebrates 75 years of the Motor Circuit, and 25 years of the Revival.

“Goodwood held a very special place in my grandfather’s heart,” said Aaron Shelby, board member of Carroll Shelby International. “He competed there as a driver in an Aston Martin and returned to race at the Circuit with the Shelby American team cars during the 1960s. Carroll attended the Goodwood Revival with his Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe, and as a Word War II aviator he especially admired the vintage warbird exhibit.”

BMW Group shared its vision of the future digital experience, both inside and outside the vehicle at the recent Consumer Electronics Show  in Las Vegas with the i Vision Dee, the futuristic mid-size sedan with a new, pared-down design language.

The name “Dee” stands for Digital Emotional Experience – and its aim is to create an even stronger bond between people and their cars going forward, BMW said. Its BMW Head-Up-Display extends across the full width of the windshield, providing a glimpse of the next vehicle generation. The BMW Group has also refined its use of color-change technology, the i Vision Dee now changing its exterior in up to 32 colors.

“With the BMW i Vision Dee, we are showcasing what is possible when hardware and software merge. In this way, we are able to exploit the full potential of digitalization to transform the car into an intelligent companion,” said Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG. “That is the future for automotive manufacturers – and, also, for BMW: the fusion of the virtual experience with genuine driving pleasure.”

The annual Werks Reunion Amelia Island returns on March 3 to The Amelia River Club at 4477 Buccaneer Trail, hosted by the local arm of the Porsche Club of America. Registration has opened for the event, which starts at 7 a.m. as registered cars begin filing the grass. Spectator parking is $40 cash per person. Calling all classic Fords – the next Caffeine and Octane will feature Henry Ford’s (pre-1989) cars and trucks of all kinds in a special display area of the Central Lot from 8 to 11 a.m. on Saturday at The Avenues mall’s south side at 10300 Southside Blvd.

The Amelia, the soon-to-be 27-year-old Concours d’Elegance, hasracer and racing legend Chip Ganassi as the honoree, all of its events running from Thursday, March 3 through Sunday, March 6, according to the event’s new owner, Hagerty.

  • The annual Spina Bifida of Jacksonville Silent Auction returns to the concours, with a collection of rare and eclectic film, television, automotive and sports-related items and more, some autographed. So Spina Bifida is accepting donations for The Amelia Concours d’Elegance 2022, all proceeds benefitting its non-profit actions helping those with the birth defect and their families.   • The concours’ official RM Sotheby’s auction returns with lot previews from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 3, and Friday, March 4, with an 11 a.m. Friday auction.

And one of the many cars for sale is a 1948 Davis Divan, appropriate since one of The Amelia’s classes this year is the unique and rare 3-wheel car. This one is the first production Divan; one of only 12 known to survive, with aluminum body, hidden headlights and a color-matched fiberglass hardtop

Restored in its present metallic brown over a two-tone beige and brown interior, it was the brainchild of Glen Gordon “Gary” Davis, a used car salesman from Indiana. Promoted as the car of the future with a streamlined aluminum body, the company claimed it could hold four adults across its bench seat, and a price tag of just $1,000. RM Sotheby’s says this 1948 example is the third Davis Divan produced and one of only a dozen known still in existence.

One car in the Sebring anniversary class is an all-American hero – the 1952 Cunningham C4-R, coming from the Miles Collier Collections at the Revs Institute. With a 331-cu. in. Chrysler HEMI under that prodigious hood scoop, this was Briggs Cunningham’s steed during his attack on the 1952 24 Hours of Le mans. Briggs drove for almost 20 of the 24 hours with a slipping clutch, ultimately finishing in 4th place.

Sunday Concours tickets are: Adults (ages 23+): $150, price increases to $175 on March 1, 2022; Military and First Responders: $85, with verification at check-in; Younger Enthusiasts (ages 13-22): $75; and children 12 and under are free. 22nd Annual Riding Into History Antique Motorcycle Concours

Motorcycle designer Paul Teutul Jr. will be the Grand Marshal for the annual Riding Into History concours on April 22 and 23 at World Golf Village, 1 World Golf Place in St. Augustine. On Friday, April 22, it is the Grand Marshal Tour Presented by Hagerty, allowing owners to ride their vintage bike through the back roads of historic Florida. Then comes the Grand Marshals Dinner at 6 p.m. Friday, April 22, at the World Golf Hall of Fame, Shell Hall, at $80 per person. Hundreds of classic and special interest motorcycles will be on display from 1 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 23, around the lake at World Golf Village.

Then there’s this 1984 BMW R100RT Last Edition, as part of the event’s silent auction to benefit K9s for Warriors.

BMW Motorrad designed it after deciding its boxer motor was done with, honoring the long-running design with a special “Last Edition.” It made 740 examples across some of its model line, then decided to revive the engine a few years later. This motorcycle was donated by longtime BMWNEF member Mary Crawford, the silent auction bid done at the banquet or concours.

There is no entry fee for qualified motorcycles at the concours, and registration closes at midnight, April 14. Admission is $15 per person for spectators. All donations go to K9s for Warriors. More information is at ridingintohistory.org.

Peterson Academies of Technology at 7450 Wilson Blvd. in Jacksonville saw dozens of classics, hot rods and modern as well as vintage muscle cars assemble on its back lawn as tours of the magnet high school’s Communications, Automotive Technology, Cosmetology, Culinary Arts, Aviation Technology, Childcare, Agriculture Science and Robotic programs occurred for prospective students.

.The oldest classic was this blue – yes, they came in colors other than black – 1913 Ford Model T.

Ponte Vedra Auto Show: The 2021 Ponte Vedra Auto Show returns on Sunday under the direction of Justin Felker and Art ‘n Motion. And this year, it adds a first-time A1A Cruise the night before on the same site as the auto show the next day.

The A1A Cruise runs from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the event field at 245 Nocatee Center Way in Ponte Vedra Beach, and it is free and open to any classic or modern sports car, motorcycle or specialty/exotic.

Then from 10 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Sunday, the Ponte Vedra Auto Show is presented by Art ‘n Motion in association with the St. Johns County Chamber of Commerce and the St. Johns County Tourism Development Council at the same grass field. The show is free for spectators. Event parking is also free. All of the show spots are filled, so only pre- registered cars will be allowed at Sunday’s show.

When the World Wide Historic Motoring Awards presented by Octane Magazine in London are announced next week in London, one Jacksonville man and Northeast Florida’s world-class concours d’elegance are up for separate nominations.

In the Best Concours in the World nomination, the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance is one of five events on the list. It won twice in 2015 and 2017. The other nominees are: The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, Salon Privé and Sydney Harbour Concours d’Elegance. Then Bill Warner, founder of The Amelia, is a nominee in the Personal Achievement category, along with Andrew and David Bagley, Henry Pearman, Paul Michaels and Phillip Sarofim.

The winners will be announced on Nov. 18 at the Rosewood Hotel in London,

Motorsports events:

Off-Road United Foundation seventh annual Krawl’n For The Fallen: Saturday and Sunday at the Florida International Rally & Motorsports Park (F.I.R.M) at 7266 Airport Road in Starke. The nonprofit Off-Road United Foundation supports law enforcement, fire fighters, EMS, service members, linemen and tow truck drivers. Krawl’n For The Fallen was started in 2015 to give back to Concerns Of Police Survivors National and support survivor retreats and kids camps. It has set a minimum donation goal of $80,000 to C.O.P.S each year.

This year’s event expects 2,000 attendees, 1,000 Jeeps and 12 local/state and federal law enforcement agencies.

Gates open at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, with opening ceremonies, open trails, K9 demos, a 5K Running 4 Heroes and more. There’s a Saturday night ride to honor those who have been lost from the year. For information, registration and ticket prices, go to bit.ly/3oEPDEK.

Duval Dirt Dash: Saturday and Sunday at Jacksonville International Raceway at 8781 U.S. 301 S. in Jacksonville. The raceway and Deaf Duck Racing hosting a minibike race – endurance, flat track oval, roval, and dirt drags. A $20 gate fee includes camping for the weekend. There’s a $30 race fee. Nitro Rallycross at The FIRM: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 4 and 5, at the Florida International Rally & Motorsport Park at 7266 Airport Rd, Starke. Teams with drivers like Tanner Foust and Travis Pastrana will race on steep berms, banked turns and 100-ft gap jumps at the track. Two-day standing room general admission – $36 each. A classic car show, Kids Zone, arts and crafts, live entertainment and a chili cook-off, plus NASCAR driver Ross Chastain and his Moose-sponsored No. 42 show car. Free for spectators and $5 to judge the chili. The event benefits K9s For Warriors.

Rodeheaver Boys Ranch Classic Car Show: 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the ranch at 380 Boys Ranch Road in Palatka. Pearl Harbor Commemoration: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, at The Military Museum of North Florida at 1 Bunker Ave, Green Cove Springs, off Florida 16. The event begins with a ceremony, plus car show, re-enactors and a military collector show.

Toys for Tots car show: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday Dec. 11, at Golden Isle Church of God, 20 Boswell Lane in Brunswick, Ga. Free for spectators and $20 per show vehicle, or a new unwrapped toy. Donations go to the area Toys for Tots program.

Cruisin’ and Crossin’ 4 Kids Car and Truck Show: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 12, at the WW Ranch Motorcross Park, 1439 Otis Road in Jacksonville. Spectators are asked to bring a canned good or donation for the needy, while show vehicle registration is $20. Live music from Beau and The Burners, sponsored by the Callahan Cruisers.

Hagerty held its own Cars and Coffee in the infield at the recent Classic 24 Hour at Daytona Presented by IMSA at the 3.56-mile-long Daytona International Speedway road course. And along with a passel of Porsches, there was a classic diesel Mercedes-Benz, some new and classic Corvettes, and a Ferrari 308, Magnum style, passing another red mid-engine sports car. Oh yes, that MG Assist MGB-GT is the real deal – roadside assistance for Morris Garage cars, complete with strobe lights front and rear.
