Bugatti has broken another world top-speed record with the W16 Mistral² World Record Car, setting a new top-speed world record for an open-top car, at 453.91 km/h. Done at ATP Automotive Testing Papenburg in Germany, this chapter in the automotive history books was opened with the Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse with the roof down, open to the elemental force of air.

Andy Wallace – Bugatti Pilote Officiel and winner of the Le Mans 24 Hours – assumed the controls of the one-off W16 Mistral World Record Car, warming up the vehicle’s bespoke high-performance tires as the historic moment arrived.

Andy increased the speed before unleashing the full power as the straight opened up coming off the banking, taking it to new heights of record-speed.

“Throughout the testing program leading up to this moment, it was incredible to feel how stable the car felt – I got the sense that it wanted to go faster,” explained Wallace. “And when it came to the moment itself, the experience was overwhelmingly thrilling; feeling the elemental forces from the open-top cockpit, the sound of the immense W16 engine emanating from the air scoops next to my ear – it made the achievement incredibly emotional. A record like this pushes the boundaries of automotive innovation, and requires immense focus, dedication, and teamwork to realize. It’s a true testament to the passion that everyone at Bugatti has for making history.”

And a sad farewell to a friend of motor racing, a fine driver, and a scion of a famous man who was driver and actor – Chad McQueen passed away a week ago. The folks at Nicolas Hunziker Automotive Fine Art passed on the family’s announcement of the death.

“His remarkable journey as a loving father to us, along with his unwavering commitment to our mother, truly exemplified a life filled with love and dedication. His passion for racing not only highlighted his exceptional talent, but also served as a way to honor his father’s legacy, a testament to the values instilled in him. He passed his passion, knowledge and dedication down to us and we will continue not only his legacy but our grandfathers as well. As a family we need to navigate this difficult time and we kindly ask for privacy as we remember and celebrate his extraordinary life.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Jeanie, Chase, and Madison

As a postscript, those of us who watched him race, or spent time with him before and after his crash, knew a warm, fun and very dedicated man who loved to race, and had fond memories of his father, even remembering sitting with him in the Porsche he raced in “Le Mans.”

Courtesy of McLaren

McLaren F1 driver, Lando Norris had an interesting drive recently, one that locked his blocks for a lap around Silverstone.

It was a life-size, one-of-a-kind, fully drivable McLaren P1 made from LEGO Technic elements.

This replica is made from 342,817 LEGO Technic elements, with fully functional steering, making it the first LEGO big build ever capable of steering and taking on tricky racetrack corners. The build’s electric motor consists of LEGO Technic Function batteries and an electric car battery, allowing it to travel further than any other LEGO model before it.

The big build process came to life with 23 specialists from design, engineering and building from the LEGO group and McLaren Automotive, with 8,344 hours of development and construction and requiring 393 different types of LEGO Technic elements.

Norris took on the twist and turns of the 3.66-miles track, and completing the lap around the Silverstone Circuit.

Wait, there’s more…

A 66-year-old British sports car maker has debuted the production version of its Ginetta Akula supercar, with a 6.4-liter V-8 producing 600 hp and 494 lb-ft of torque.

Announced in 2019, only20 of the 2-seaters will be made, each starting at $362,300. And with carbon fiber monocoque and floor, the car weighs just 2,624 lbs. – not much more than a Mazda Miata. And the Akula’s wind tunnel-tested aerodynamic package was derived from the Ginetta G61-LT-P1 LMP1 race car, with a flat floor and front splitter, rear wing and rear diffuser for high levels of downforce.

Power goes to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox, or a dual-clutch, seven-speed automatic transmission, and 60 mph shows up in under 3 seconds, with a 180 mph-plus top speed. The centrally mounted V-8’s location ensures a 50:50 weight distribution, Ginetta said.

The Hagerty Drivers Foundation hosts its annual “Cars at the Capital” exhibition on Sept. 19 to 24 on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. And displayed in a lit glass enclosure will be the 35th and 36th vehicles to be added to the National Historic Vehicle Register.

The 35th vehicle is the Beatnik Bandit, released in 1961 by Ed “Big Daddy” Roth. Built on an early ‘50s shortened Oldsmobile chassis with a custom one-off body, Roth’s fiberglass bubble top car creation defined the 1960s custom car craze. The Beatnik Bandit is among his most well remembered cars as it became a best-selling model kit for the Revell company, and later a micro-sized Hot Wheels car. The car is now owned by the National Automobile Museum in Reno.

The 36th vehicle is also commemorated by a Hot Wheels toy – the Deora – a Dodge A100 pickup truck heavily customized by Mike and Larry Alexander for the 1967 Detroit Autorama custom car show. In 1964, Harry Bentley Bradley was commissioned to design for the Alexander brothers. AMT did a scale version, then Hot Wheels. It is owned by the Tom Abrams Collection in Detroit.

The vehicles have been added to the National Historic Vehicle Register in recognition of their significance in American automotive history and culture.

Supercar Xperiences – Dec. 13 to 15 – YOUR turn to get behind the wheel of a fleet of exotic cars at The FIRM’s 1.5-mile race track at 7266 Airport Road in Starke . Prices do not include Track Insurance (Starting at $39 per Car) which is required for drivers.

And finally…

A new pony is coming to Ford for 2024, and here’s a good look at that seventh-generation coupe, with turbocharged and naturally-aspirated engines.

“Investing in another generation of Mustang is a big statement at a time when many of our competitors are exiting the business of internal combustion vehicles,” Ford CEO Jim Farley said. “Ford, however, is turbocharging its ICE growth plan, adding connected technology, opinionated derivatives, and hybrid options to our most profitable and popular cars – all in the Ford Blue family – on top of investing $50 billion in electric vehicles through 2026.”

The new Mustang once again comes in convertible or coupe, V-8 or turbocharged 4-cylinder, manual or automatic models. And the next-gen gets what Ford calls a “fighter jet-inspired digital cockpit” with two flowing, curved and configurable displays.

The car’s 12.4-inch digital instrument cluster can be customized with different animated designs and drive-mode dependent visuals, and is based on the same Unreal Engine 3D creation tool used in modern video games. The car’s current setup is displayed on the 13.2-inch center stack as real-time graphical renderings, settings adjusted by swiping the graphic to rotate the car virtually in a true gamified style.

“We are taking advantage of every pixel,” Ford Mustang interaction design manager Craig Sandvig said. “We can be creative in showing necessary driving information and give the driver control of selecting colors, classic Mustang gauges or even a ‘calm’ screen where only minimal details are displayed.”

Mustang has a standard cloth interior featuring all-cloth seats with optional Micro Suede vinyl inserts and black seat belts, while Premium models benefit from upgraded wrapped and accent stitched across the instrument panel and door trim. EcoBoost models feature Ford’s ‘ActiveX’ synthetic leather upholstery with multiple color options, while GT models gain leather seat inserts. Higher series models offer an upgraded, full-leather steering wheel, as well as a choice of color accent stitching and a unique upholstery perforation across the seat inserts, complemented by color-coordinated, asymmetric accent striping on the seat belts.

The center console can also incorporate an available wireless mobile phone charging pad while new overhead USB ports are installed above the cockpit, conveniently placed for track cameras and other devices, helping prevent wires from draping across the cabin.

The car’s low, horizontal brow across the front emphasizes overall frontal width, while the upper grille design shape is influenced by the original 1960s design. The Tri-Bar LED headlamps continue the Mustang’s classic lighting signature. Each model in the Mustang lineup carries its own unique front end. GT is differentiated from EcoBoost models by larger, more aggressive grille openings, engineered to allow increased airflow, reflecting the increase in power and performance.

Mustang GT gets an advanced, 5-liter Coyote V-8 with 10-speed automatic transmission available. The EcoBoost is a new turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine. Both are both available with an optional Performance Pack, which adds a front Tower Brace, Torsen Limited Slip differential and optional MagneRide active suspension, wider rear wheels and tires, and larger Brembo brakes.

Then there’s the Dark Horse with a specially modified 5-liter V-8 with 500 hp.

A team of Ford engineers, designers and experts worked for more than three years to create Dark Horse, a street and track-capable performance Mustang with available carbon fiber wheels from Carbon Revolution; the first new performance name for the brand since Mustang Bullitt was introduced in 2001.

Autocross, drag racing and a car show as the Grassroots Motorsports $2000 Challenge presented by Tire Rack returns to Gainesville Raceway on October 22 and 23. The formula for this event is simple – build a car for less than $2000, enter it in the 9 a.m. Saturday autocross, then in the 6 p.m. drag race to see if money equals speed and agility. Here’s just some of what’s been brung and run in recent years:

Watch this video to see what some of the action was like at that 2017 Challenge.

Spectators are welcome at the $2000 Challenge at the track, paddock, pits and more.

The racers also show their creations during Sunday’s 9 a.m. $2000 Challenge concours, joined now by the Cars & Caffeine Powered by Hagerty on Sunday at the famed dragstrip at 11211 N County Road 225 in Gainesville. Registration is free, and all cars are welcome – includes free spectator entry (Sunday only) for everybody in your car. Attendees must pre-register here due to our limit of 500 cars.
