Cars should start arriving by 7 a.m. that June 11 Saturday to the Southside Boulevard side of the shopping mall, the best way in through Malabar Boulevard.

As always, there will be a Porsche section, and an exotics area at the June 11 C&O. And look for literally hundreds of vintage and classic cars, muscle cars and so much more.

Local car collectors Mark and Hilary Becker took their stunning 1942 Chrysler Royal to last weekend’s AACA Grand National Meet in Virginia Beach, and came home with a Grand National Award. Becker, also Director of Entrants and Judges at The Amelia concours d’elegance, took the coupe to the Antique Automobile Club of America event, which was hosted by the Tidewater Region AACA at The Founders Inn in Virginia Beach. Only vehicles with AACA Senior Awards are eligible to participate.

So you may remember seeing the 2023 Nissan Z at the last Caffeine and Octane at The Avenues.

Well, the folks at Hagerty Media and Jason wondered – How fast is the new Nissan Z compared to a Toyota GR Supra 3.0 and Ford Mustang Mach 1? The 2023 Nissan Z had a 9-speed automatic transmission, vs. the 10-speed Mach 1 and 8-speed Supra. I won’t spoil it for you – here’s the Hagerty Media story and video report.

It has graced The Amelia concours d’elegance, and was the prime transportation in its day of famed Mercedes-Benz driving engineer Rudi Uhlenhaut, aka the father of 300 SL.

Now one of only two Mercedes 300 SLR “Uhlenhaut coupés” created in 1955 has been sold at a private May 5 RM Sotheby’s auction for a stunning $142 million to a private collector, the auction house to donate the proceeds to establish a worldwide “Mercedes-Benz Fund” for long-term educational and research scholarships in the areas of environmental science for young people.

That makes it the world’s most expensive care. Our friends at Hagerty broke the news; now they have posted another piece about driving it. Actually, Andrew Frankel did, earplugs and all – here’s his detailed piece.

And here’s something you need to fire up the speakers for – The Brumos Collection got some hydrocarbons fired up with a recent run of its 1968 Porsche 908, which is normally exhibited at the museum at 5959 San Pablo Road S. The museum likes to exercise their cars, this time the 908 being warmed up and flown low in advance of the Highlands Motoring Festival, Thursday thru Sunday, June 9 to 12, in Highlands, NC

This particular 908, with drivers Jo Siffert and Vic Elford at the helm, won the Nürburgring 1000km in 1968.

Caffeine and Octane

The name is Z – just Z: The gang at HSR – Historic Sportscar Racing – brought the new 2023 Nissan Z to last Saturday’s Caffeine and Octane.

The 2023 Z’s 3-liter V-6 twin turbo engine has 400 hp at 6,400 rpm, and 350 lb-ft of torque from 1,600 to 5,200 rpm. That’s 68 more horsepower than the 370Z, with a 30 percent increase in torque and an estimated 15 percent improvement in 0 to 60 mph acceleration. This one had the 9-speed automatic transmission with standard launch control system.

Inside, a12.3-inch TFT meter display is all-new with three display modes to suit driver preference – “Normal,” “Enhanced” with tachometer and speedometer on the edges of the display, and “Sport” with the tachometer in the center with shift-up light, plus boost gauge or G meter display.

The new Z’s center stack put three analog pod gauges on the instrument panel (boost, turbo speed, volt) within the driver’s eyesight. Both the manual and automatic shift levers are new, Nissan says.

Nissan says the Z Coupe Sport 6MT or 9AT starts at $39,990, while the top-level Z Coupe Proto Spec starts at $52,990.

The next Caffeine and Octane Jacksonville rumbles into life from 8 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 11, at The Avenues mall’s Southside Boulevard parking lots. Jeep vehicles will be showcased in the central lot. An estimated 1,000-plus cars, trucks and more usually come to the all-makes, all-models free show, with all parking spots first come/first serve. Cars should start arriving by 7 a.m. to the Southside Boulevard side of the shopping mall, the best way in through Malabar Boulevard.

Along with the Z, there were some other spectacular, rare and intriguing vehicles at C&O last weekend, including quite a Saab story, a new Rivian EV pickup, a rare Ferrari Berlinetta Boxer and a Toyota fire truck…check it out:

Last Saturday’s feature cars included a lot of Chevrolet SSs, as well as the Australian GM cousin that donated most of itself to make the Chevrolet – the Holden Commodore SS:

And there were swarms of the other featured special display vehicle – Toyota Supra.

As always, there will be a Porsche section, and an exotics area at the June 11 C&O. And look for literally hundreds of vintage and classic cars, muscle cars and so much more.

And finally…

There’s another Porsche readying to tackle Pikes Peak, and it’s a Hoonigan from Ken Block.

Or officially – the Hoonipigasus.

Courtesy Hoonigan Racing

Built by BBi Autosport in conjunction with Hoonigan and Hoonigan Racing Division, it’s got 1,400 hp with all-wheel-drive, specially designed for the 2022 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. And its all-new livery was created by artist Trouble Andrew, a.k.a. Guccighost, paying homage to the famous 1971 Porsche 917/20 “Pink Pig” race car.

The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is an invitation-only automobile hill climb to the summit of Pikes Peak in Colorado on Sunday, June 26. It’s the 100th running on a 12.42-mile course with 156 turns to finish line at 14,115 feet above sea level. It’s not Block’s first pass up Pikes Peak, racing in 2005 in a lower-class Group N rally car. Block also piloted his 1,400hp, twin-turbo, methanol-fueled 1965 Ford Mustang Hoonicorn RTR V2 in 2017 in the “Climbkhana: Pikes Peak” film.

Hoonipigasus was specifically built to suit Block’s driving style and features a transmission tunnel, known as the “Chorizo Tunnel,” that goes from shoulder height down to the front axle, resulting in a lower center of gravity. Weighing just 1,000 kg, the machine features GPS Height-adjusted suspension based on previous year’s telemetry. This year, the car will be competing in the PPO (Pikes Peak Open) class with hopes of adding an overall victory to BBi’s 8 podiums with 5 class wins at the PPIHC.

“The Pikes Peak Hill Climb is one of the big reasons as to why I’m a rally driver,” said Block, co-founder of Hoonigan. “The list of drivers who have raced and won this hill climb includes many of my heroes: Walter Rohrl, Ari Vatanen, Michelle Mouton, Sebastien Loeb and Rod Millen to name a few. I’ve always wanted the chance to race Pikes Peak at the top level and compete for an overall win – and with our team and BBi Autosport creating this amazing Porsche, we’ve got a good shot!”

Photo courtesy Steve Toman/The Brumos Collection

In case you forgot, Brumos Racing of Jacksonville hits Pikes Peak in June as well with driver David Donohue at the wheel of a Porsche GT2 RS Clubsport prepared in the iconic Brumos red, white, and blue livery. And now, The Brumos Collection has a t-shirt to go with the car.

This event is the first competition for Brumos since 2013, when it retired from 50 years of competing in a variety of series and classes.

The Brumos Collection

The PPIHC is Donohue’s 120th race driving for Brumos. Of note, he was part of the team that brought Brumos its fourth overall win at the 24 hours of Daytona in 2009, more than 30 years after three Brumos victories in 1973, 1975 and 1978.

The Brumos Collection, opened in 2020, is a 35,000 sq. ft. interactive museum at 5959 San Pablo Road S. Ultimately, the new Brumos GT2 RS Clubsport will join the many cars at the Brumos Collection in Jacksonville.

The t-shirt is $35, available at The Brumos Collection online store.

Photos courtesy ABB Robotics

The artwork of 8-year-old child prodigy Advait Kolarkar’s has been applied to a Volkswagen by ABB Robotics, creating what the company called the first robot-painted art car.

Kolarkar’s exhibition of his collected works is being held now in London’s Gagliardi Gallery. But ABB Robotics collaborated with him and Dubai-based digital design collective Illusorr to create the art car using its PixelPaint technology that recreated the boy’s swirling, monochromatic design as well as Illusorr’s tri-color geometrical patterns. The IRB 5500 paint robots, with 1,000 nozzles in the printer head, were able to complete the highly complex artworks in less than 30 minutes.

Automotive designer Ian Callum, former Ford, Jaguar and Aston Martin designer, said there’s something very special about a car.

“People get emotionally attached to them and the importance of personalization is becoming stronger and stronger,” he said. “In fact, I’m working with customers who actually want the whole car designed in a bespoke way. So this paint offering – with all sorts of new levels of individual design for a motor car – is incredible.”

To create the art car, ABB refurbished a Volkswagen SUV that was damaged in 2021 floods in Germany.

And finally…

Auto designer Henrik Fisker, who designed the Fisker Ocean EV SUV, has revealed a tease of his new Project Ronin electric sports car.

“The aim is to achieve the world’s longest range for a production EV, combined with extremely high levels of performance,” Fisker said in a news release. “Project Ronin will be a showcase for our internal engineering, powertrain, and software capabilities.”

The code name was inspired by the film of the same title, development of the Ronin beginning last year. The goal, he said – create a “futuristic Grand Touring sports car suitable for long road trips while carrying four adults and their luggage.”

Not many details have arisen yet, other than unique doors for better ingress and egress and what Fisker called “a luxurious, sustainable vegan interior.” Look for more info in August 2023, with production starting in the second half of 2024.
The Danish-American automotive designer was the designer of the BMW Z8, Aston martin DB9 and V8 Vantage, Fisker Karma hybrid and the Galpin-Fisker Mustang Rocket, seen here.

And we told you that Jacksonville’s EV Rider had a Mach-E in store.

Well, vlogger Bill Bortzfield learned this EV Mustang Mach-E GT-Performance can do a 3.5 second 0-60 mph run while still getting the equivalent of 82 miles per gallon.

And finally…

News that the Corvette, America’s own mid-engined exotic, is going electric had the interweb buzzing in the past few days with yays and nays. But GM’s own Mark Reuss posted a subtle “BOOM here comes an electrified baby….” on Facebook as Chevrolet said that in addition to 2023’s new Chevrolet Corvette Z06, a hybrid Corvette will be available as early as next year, and a fully electric version to follow. The video that Chevrolet posted shows the volt-Vette playing hard in the snow, and there’s one more thing – all four wheels are working, meaning all-wheel-drive to handle the instant torque of an electric powerplant.

Jacksonville’s own EV Rider, a new video blog on all things EV by Bill Bortzfield, has his own comments on the electric Corvette, along with a look at the recent JEA Drive Electric EV Car Show that included a Rivian R1T, Mustang Mach-E GT-P, Teslas and more. He’s also got a Ford Mach-E drive review coming up soon.

And finally…

Florida gets its first Formula 1 race on Sunday, May 8, on a temporary 5.41-mile Miami International Autodrome course in the Hard Rock Stadium complex in Miami Gardens. And Red Bull Racing decided to have some fun showing how it got driver Sergio Perez and his Red Bull

RB7 F1 car from the canyons of New York City to the Miami race track with an 11-minute video.

Sure it’s a bit silly, including the gator and parking ticket. But what happens after the gator is left behind is funny, and cool, with help from Red Bull athlete and professional wakeboarder/barefoot water-skier Parks Bonifay.

And the help Perez gets to navigate Miami traffic is priceless.

We even get some hot laps on the then-unfinished track.

According to the FIA, the Florida race joins its Texan counterpart in Austin to become the second U.S. race on the calendar, and the 11th different American venue to host a round of the Formula 1 world championship.

  • Mason Harrell’s 1996 Honda Acty is a kei microtruck, won third place in the Best Truck category. Behind it, Giancarlo Fruzzetti’s 63 Fiat 600 D, which won first place in the Best Classic Foreign category.

The annual show is sponsored by Jacksonville Car Culture and presented by Key Buick/GMC Hyundai, Genesis, and North Florida Lincoln. The Snyder Community Center is a HUD subsidized property for low-income seniors of all faiths that receives no funding from HUD. Located a block from the show site between HUD-assisted San Jose Apartments I and II on Galicia Road, it was named in honor of the late Bishop Snyder, who served the Catholic Diocese of St. Augustine from 1979 to 2000.

And the 20th annual Jacksonville Grand Prix to Benefit Spina Bifida ran sun and rain:

Teams tackled sun, clouds and a very rare thunderstorm red flag in the early last Saturday afternoon as the annual endurance go-kart race saw 23 teams of drivers compete to raise funds for Spina Bifida of Jacksonville.

A passing thunderstorm caused the race to be red-flagged just after 1 p.m., but it resumed.

The Grand Prix last weekend raised more than $8,500 for Spina Bifida of Jacksonville, on top of the Mario Andretti-autographed item sold at the RM Sotheby’s auction at The Amelia concours a month ago, its winning $138,000 bid also donated to the non-profit agency. And during
Spina Bifida of Jacksonville helps children and young adults dealing with the birth defect, which occurs when the spine fails to close properly during the first month of pregnancy. The agency also supports the medical, mental, social and educational needs of the clients and their families, including attendance at Florida’s disability conference and free sporting events, movies and family dinners.
One team had some serious racers on board – NASCAR crew chief Ray Evernham, road racer/author/Penske team timer and scorer Judy Stropus, and Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance founder Bill Warner, seen here during the rain red flag.

The race was held at the 103rd Street Sports Complex at 10271 103rd St.

And finally…

The red, white and blue of Jacksonville’s most iconic racing team will return on June 26, as The Brumos Collection announced that its iconic No. 59 livery will return to professional competition at the 100th running of The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, aka “The Race to the Clouds.”

Here’s a rendering of what the car will look like in that iconic livery:

The Brumos Collection

And race car driver David Donohue, who raced for Brumos Racing in its IMSA days, will be driving a Porsche GT2 RS Clubsport up the famous 12.42-mile, 156-turns course to the finish line at 14,115 feet above sea level. Prepared in the iconic Brumos red, white, and blue livery, this event is the first competition for Brumos since 2013, when it retired from 50 years of competing in a variety of series and classes.

“Racing for Brumos has been a highlight of my career that I look back on with pride,” Donohue said. “I feel humbled to play a role in bringing back the number 59 to such a special race and its milestone running.”

Pikes Peak is Donohue’s 120th race driving for Brumos. He was part of the team that brought Brumos its fourth overall win at the 24 hours of Daytona in 2009, more than 30 years after three Brumos victories in 1973, 1975 and 1978. For Donohue, son of famed race-car driver and 1972 Indy 500 champion Mark Donohue, the win came on the 40th anniversary of his father’s 1969 overall triumph in the same race. The 2009 win was the culmination of then-Brumos CEO Bob Snodgrass’s stewardship of the Daytona Prototype program, which began in the early 2000s, and built upon Brumos nearly 50 years of competing in a variety of series and classes.

After Brumos retired from racing in 2013, the Jacksonville-based dealership was sold in 2016. But its racing heritage, as well as a collection of open-wheel Indianapolis race cars and other classics, now live at the 35,000 sq. ft. Brumos Collection.

“When we opened our collection in 2020, I was asked if we would ever race again,” Brumos Collection founder Dano Davis said. “Only two years later – and on the tail-end of a global pandemic – we’re taking on a storied, historic race with David as our driver. From the collection to the track, the iconic 59 will now once again fly.”

The museum facility opened in 2020 to the public at 5959 San Pablo Road S., more information at thebrumoscollection.com.

The plan is to have BBI Autosport prepare the car for Brumos in May, with support from Porsche of the Main Line in Philadelphia and Porsche Colorado Springs.

“Being back in Brumos colors is just unbelievably exciting for me, beyond words,” Donohue said.

And ultimately, the new Brumos GT2 RS Clubsport will join the many cars celebrating milestones at the Brumos Collection in Jacksonville.
